Holy Ship! Which States Ship the Most
"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays These couriers from the swift completion of Their appointed rounds."
This is the unofficial motto of the United States Postal Service, chiseled in granite gray above the entrance to the New York City Post Office on 8th Avenue. The USPS has stayed true to this mission in its nearly 240 years of service. While the use of digital platforms has caused the amount of First Class Mail to dwindle, there are still many people who ship and receive mail and packages daily.
Individuals who receive the most email tend to be concentrated in the upper Midwest and Northeast. In 2015, these regions sent and received more First Class Mail than the rest of the country. The top states for sending and receiving First Class mail were Maine, Montana, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and Vermont.
USPS is experiencing an INCREASE in volume in the delivery package, up 11% in 2017. Shipping and packaging account for one-fourth of USPS's total revenue. In contrast, letter, email volume, including First Class Mail, has dropped about 3.8% by volume.
When it comes to bulk mail, the District of Columbia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts also receive a high amount of deliveries. A few states in the Southeast, including Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, receive a moderate amount of deliveries. Other states in the Southeast and most states in the Southwest states receive less bulk mail than in other parts of the country.
The continued use of letter and package mail address reveal that many businesses need, and even often prefer, snail mail over digital platforms.
